Santa Monica Travel & Tourism (SMTT) works to strengthen the local economy by enhancing and promoting our community as a distinctive, compelling and welcoming travel destination. SMTT has been a Green Business Certification Program founding partner since 2007, promoting Santa Monica as an exciting and sustainable destination and providing services to tourists, residents, and local businesses.

Their remodeled administrative office features ample sunlight, repurposed equipment, desks and furniture.  Fitted cabinets from their previous location were repurposed as mobile storage cabinets after cleverly installing wheels.  SMTT’s Staff kitchen is stocked with reusable utensils, plates and glasses. To conserve water, faucet aerators installed on hand sinks emit 0.5 GPM (gallons per minute), kitchen faucet flows at 1 GPM, and a high-efficiency toilet flushes 1.28 gallons.

Santa Monica Travel & Tourism instigates a Green Office Policy in their company handbook prompting only the purchase of post-consumer recycling content (PCRC) paper products. EPA Safer Choice or Green Seal certified cleaners like Seventh Generation and ECOS, replace toxic and corrosive disinfectants containing chlorine. To support Santa Monica’s Transportation Demand Management ordinance, staff performs local errands by foot, office is located within .1 mile of public transportation access, and their hybrid electric vehicle fleet is used for local tours and carpooling to offsite meetings.

In early 2023, SMTT launched a partnership with Santa Monica-based, micro-mobility company Veo to distribute free helmets to riders in the City. In addition to the partnership, all helmets returned to any of the Visitor Information Centers are donated to Santa Monica Spoke for a future community project. Helmets are one size fits most.

"It is not overwhelming to become a green certified business with the help and guidance of Sustainable Works. The step-by-step checklist is very easy to use and getting certified is a positive thing for your business and staff."
