Located just seven blocks from the beach, Santa Monica Hotel offers very affordable Westside accommodations. Santa Monica Hotel’s green efforts resulted in substantial cost savings. After converting their sprinklers to drip irrigation and empowering guests to opt out of laundry, they cut water use by an estimated 43%. Guestrooms have high-efficiency faucets flowing at half a gallon per minute.
To cut energy use, 197 light fixtures were retrofitted, phasing out incandescent and compact fluorescents for annual savings of $1,800 or 10,400 kWh.
Each guestroom is fitted with a recycling bin to remind guests to separate materials. The Santa Monica Hotel team receives regular “Reduce, Reuse, Recycling” employee training via the Green Business Program. Refillable pump dispensers for in-room bath products help reduce single-use plastic. To further this effort, the hotel lobby offers a filtered water station for guests to refill.
To improve indoor air quality – Santa Monica Hotel switched to Waxie Green cleaning products approved by Ecologo and US EPA Safer Choice. Guests staying for two nights or more can opt in for the hotel's Green clean program, receiving a $10 credit per night. Spent linens are donated to local shelters.
To promote healthy lifestyles and more sustainable modes of transportation, Santa Monica Hotel purchased electric bikes for guests to use free of charge during their stay. To help maintain the bikes, they partner with neighboring business, Santa Monica Bicycle Ambulance. The hotel supports local environmental Santa Monica organizations like Heal the Bay, by selling their branded shark plush toy for $15 of which $10 is donated directly to Heal the Bay.
