Physical Therapyworks is a Santa Monica-based physical therapy practice committed to integrating sustainability into its daily operations.  Physical Therapyworks uses evidence-based practices to diagnose and create a plan of care based on the information gathered during client’s examination, clinical experience, the latest research, and individuals’ goals and preferences.  They create customized treatment plans for each patient.

Physical Therapyworks implemented several measures to improve energy efficiency, including the use of Kasa Smart technology to automate heating, cooling, and lighting systems, helping to reduce unnecessary energy consumption. The facility also utilizes an electric water heater rather than a gas-powered unit.

To minimize exposure to harmful chemicals, Physical Therapyworks uses diluted hydrogen peroxide for surface cleaning in place of more toxic disinfectants. The practice also prioritizes waste reduction by using reusable cloths for cleaning, avoiding disposable sanitizing wipes, and providing reusable dishware for staff and clients.

Clients are encouraged to reduce single-use waste by refilling their own water bottles using locally sourced Santa Monica tap water provided in reusable carafes. Kraft unbleached paper cups are also available.

Physical Therapyworks sustainable transportation measures implemented under the guidelines of the GoSaMo Transportation Management Organization (TMO) include performing local errands on foot, installing a bike rack, and having employees (including the owner, John) commute by public transit or bike.

Sustainability is further supported through employee engagement and preparedness efforts. The organization maintains an environmental policy that is shared with staff, encourages lower-impact commuting practices, and has developed climate resiliency and emergency preparedness plans to help ensure the safety of employees during extreme weather events.
