Patagonia Santa Monica

GBC 2024-2027 INNOVATOR

Patagonia understands that all life on earth is under threat of extinction. They aim to use the resources they have- their investments, their voice and their imaginations- to do something about it.  Patagonia has stayed true to their core values during their fifty-plus years in business.

Patagonia’s innovative and effective zero waste strategies include:

  • Worn Wear and Repair garment programs provide new life to old gear.

  • Leftover or returned merchandise not eligible for sale is donated to local organizations (Bridge housing, conservation, wildlife rescue, etc.)

  • All retail locations collect #4 plastic garment bags and then ship to local Patagonia warehouses where they are repurposed into composite decking, railing, and other outdoor items made from recycled materials.

After Patagonia realized their company-wide supply chain accounts for 97% of their carbon emissions, they phased in recycled materials, low emission dyeing techniques, and more research into biodegradable plastics, among other things.  Additionally, Patagonia’s Drive-Less program aims to further reduce their footprint and support sustainable commuting. Every year, employees can earn up to $500 for choosing to forgo single occupant vehicle commuting.
